The proposition

Read the authority, not just the answer.

A summary without the paragraph is not something counsel sensibly rely upon. Each proposition Marshall puts forward ends in a numbered marker; the marker opens the authority beneath, at the paragraph relied on.

  1. Cited to the paragraph

Each proposition is linked to its authority and, where one exists, to the paragraph. A page number is given only as a fallback, and nothing is printed when neither exists.

  2. Consulted is not cited

What the tool read but did not rely on does not appear. The answer states how many authorities there are to verify and lists them in a Research and sources panel.

  3. Audited before sign-off

A Citation audit checks every proposition link, pinpoint and supporting passage, how each authority has been treated, and whether a practitioner has reviewed it.

Matters

File documents in categories immediately recognisable to practitioners.

Each Matter has its own library in nine boxes. A single question can read up to 350 of the matter's documents in one pass, and long documents are read properly not sampled.

The Matter Library: a search box that reads every document on the matter, and nine category shelves from Pleadings / memorials to Other, each listing what belongs in it.

Work product

Chronology, authorities, submissions, the bundle, key dates and time.

Chronology

Date, neutral event and the exhibit or source reference for each entry. Unverifiable dates are set out separately. Exports to Word, Excel and PDF.

List of Authorities

Maintained by the practitioner, drawn from the matter's authority record. Exports to Word and PDF.

Submissions and skeletons

Drafted from the matter's own pleadings, evidence and authorities, each proposition carrying its source. The practitioner finishes the draft.

Key dates and deadlines

Record key dates and deadlines for each Matter, listed on the front screen. Limitation periods can be inserted.

Hearing bundle

One paginated, indexed PDF with dividers and bookmarks, assembled from the Matter's own libraries.

Marshall for Word

Insert an answer or its List of Authorities at the cursor; check authorities reads the citation and reports accuracy.

Time recording

Record time against the matter as the work is done, and export the record for the fee note. Nothing is timed without being asked.

News and Entertainment

While Marshall is thinking, get the day's legal news from nine jurisdictions and a few quiet pastimes.

Every export is the practitioner's to correct before it goes anywhere.

A judgment is held where the source permits; where its terms forbid storage, its data is held for reference only in Marshall's bespoke Legal Library.

A question put in one forum is answered from that forum's material first; decisions from elsewhere are kept, ranked after it and labelled Persuasive.

Origins

Designed by experienced practitioners for real world lawyers.

Marshall was designed in Hong Kong by practitioners with decades of legal experience in the APAC region. The common law they practise is the common law of the jurisdictions Marshall knows, and Marshall was shaped by what survived their review. It is a working aid for practitioners, made by practitioners.

Confidence and control

Separate Matters, privilege and confidentiality. The practitioner decides.

  1. Individual organisations

Material used by a practitioner, firm or chambers is never shared; a Matter is visible only to those authorised.

  2. Privilege travels with the document.

Confidentiality and privilege markings are kept; a matter marked private cannot be shared.

  3. Backed up nightly, encrypted, offsite.

Seven daily and four weekly copies. Hosted with OVH, Singapore.

Marshall assists your work; the practitioner reviews what it produces and remains responsible for it.

Questions

Frequently asked

More in the help pages

Are the citations verified?

Every answer states how many authorities there are to verify and opens a Research and sources panel listing them. Each proposition is linked to its authority and, where one exists, to the paragraph; a page number is given only as a fallback, and nothing is printed when neither exists. A Citation audit then checks the proposition links, the pinpoints, the supporting passages, how each authority has been treated and whether a practitioner has reviewed it. What Marshall consulted but did not rely on is not cited. Verification remains the practitioner's task, and the tool is built to make that task quick rather than to replace it.

Who is Marshall for, and which jurisdictions does it cover?

Practitioners of law. It knows the common-law jurisdictions best: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada and England and Wales.

Where is our data held?

Marshall is hosted with OVH in the Singapore region. Encrypted backups are taken nightly and held offsite, seven daily and four weekly. Every connection uses HSTS. The subprocessor notice lists each third party that handles data on our behalf.

Can another chambers or firm see our matters?

No. Each set is its own organisation, and material in one is not reachable from another. Within a set, a matter is visible only to the members, pupils and clerks authorised on it. Confidentiality and privilege markings are kept with the document, and a matter marked private cannot be shared. Support staff cannot browse matters in the ordinary course; administrative access is limited to named operators and is audit-logged, and the audit log never records the content of a document or a question.

How are the answers produced?

Answers are written by a large language model that Marshall supplies, with passages retrieved from documents from the Matter Library and the Legal Library.

What is in the Legal Library?

Thousands of judgments and legislation from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom, available through Marshall's bespoke Legal Library, including from live sources where available.

How do we get access, and what does it cost?

Two ways. A practitioner can start any plan from the Plans page with 30 free credits: give a name, a work email and the chambers or firm, confirm the link we email, and sign in. No card is needed to start; one can be added at any time under Billing. A chambers or firm that would rather be set up as a whole can request access instead; we follow up, create the set as its own organisation and an administrator issues accounts. Plans start at US$135 a month for one practitioner and 50 credits, and a credit is roughly one comprehensive research query; chambers plans share a larger allowance across the set. Please do not put passwords or confidential information in either form.

Does it work in Word?

Yes. Marshall for Word is a task-pane add-in. It inserts an answer or its List of Authorities at the cursor, and Check authorities reads the citations in a selected passage and reports whether each one is on the matter's authority record. An unmatched citation is reported as not recorded, never as wrong. The add-in signs in with the same account as the workspace.

Access

Two ways in.

A practitioner can begin alone, today, with 30 free credits. A chambers or firm that would rather be set up as a whole tells us who they are, and we onboard the set.

  1. Start a trial yourself

Choose a plan on the Plans page and give a name, a work email and the chambers or firm. We email a verification link; once it is confirmed the workspace is yours, with 30 free credits and no card.

Choose a plan and start →
  2. Ask us to set up the set

Use the form. A person answers: we confirm who you are, talk through the work you would put through Marshall, and create the set as its own organisation, with roles assigned and members signing in at chat.marshall.com.hk.
